Sudan, the largest country in Africa, was a revelation. The life-force of the country, the Nile and its tributaries, wove a narrow ribbon of green which we followed for many kilometres. The contrast between the width of this green band through Egypt and through Sudan was quite stark – the irrigation techniques used in Egypt were not apparent in Sudan and therefore a smaller population could be supported in the sparse towns sprinkled along the Nile. The overwhelming friendliness of the Sudanese people was another surprise – many times vehicles would stop as we were taking rests breaks along the side of the road and invite us to their homes for food. The people were welcoming despite or maybe because of the harshness of the desert environment which was their home. The war in Darfur in the south was a world away from the Sudan we cycled through.
